At about 5am Adenike woke up to the sound of roosters crowing and the distant call to prayer from
the local mosque. Dawn's light filtered through the threadbare curtains, casting a soft glow on
the small room she shared with her five children. It was a familiar sight, but the emptiness
beside her was a constant reminder of what she'd lost.
On March 13th, 2023, her world was upended by the sudden loss of her husband. With five children to feed and little to fall back on, she found herself in a desperate struggle for survival. The future seemed bleak as her brother-in-law, supposed to be her family's guardian, sold off her late husband's farm produce and vehicle which was their sole sources of income. Grief turned to helplessness as she fought to keep her family afloat.
Determined not to succumb to despair, she leaned into her skill as a fashion designer, turning her modest home in Egbe, Kogi State, into a small tailoring shop. But the income from stitching and mending clothes barely covered the family's basic needs. Many nights, her children went to bed with empty stomachs, while she stayed up stitching, hoping the extra effort would bring in enough money to get them through the next day.
The turning point came when we were able to help her by giving her a grinding machine. This allowed her to start a small business grinding different grains for her community and has became the catalyst for transformation.
With the grinding machine, she is able to offer a valuable service to the people of Egbe. She began grinding corn, millet, and other grains for customers, earning a modest but steady income. The new business is rapidly growing, and has started attracting more customers from neighboring areas.
She has now become financially independent ~ no longer having to deal with the fluctuating demand for her service as a tailor.
The consistent revenue from her grinding business allowed her to cover her family's basic needs, put food on the table, and even save a little for emergencies. She will now be able to afford school fees and uniforms for her children, ensuring their education continues without interruption.
Today, her grinding business is thriving, and she has become a respected member of her community. The humanitarian support she received has not only provided a financial lifeline but also gave her the confidence to face whatever challenges come her way.
Her story is one of resilience, showcasing importance of community support, and how even small acts of kindness positively impact and change someone's life.
