In a small village just outside of Tirana, nestled in a forgotten corner of the world, lives Zeqine ~ a grandmother whose days are filled with both simplicity and struggle. At 73 years old, Zeqine navigates the challenges of living in poverty alone, her children having sought a better life abroad. The weight of financial burdens rests heavy on her aging shoulders, as her meager $80 pension barely covers her basic needs.



Zeqine rises with the sun, her hands weathered from a lifetime of toil. Each day, she faces the daunting task of stretching her meager pension to cover essentials like food, utilities, and medication. The loneliness of her empty house echoes with the absence of her children, who left seeking opportunities beyond their impoverished village.

In Zeqine's community, poverty is a pervasive shadow that darkens every doorstep. Unemployment, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure plague the villagers, compounding their struggles. Families like Zeqine's often find themselves caught in a cycle of poverty, with limited resources to break free.



While Zeqine tries to make ends meet, she often finds herself choosing between buying groceries or paying for medication. Clean water is a luxury, and healthcare services are minimal, leaving many in the community vulnerable to preventable illnesses.

A particularly harrowing experience for Zeqine was when she fell ill and couldn’t afford the prescribed medication. The fear of not being able to take care of herself in her time of need brought a stark realization of her vulnerability.

Despite her challenges, Zeqine dreams of a better future for her family. She hopes her children succeed abroad and that one day, she can reunite with them in a more prosperous setting.

Zeqine finds solace in her faith and the memories of better days. She draws strength from her resilience, knowing that each day survived is a testament to her endurance.

In the face of adversity, the community rallies together, sharing resources and offering support to those in need. Zeqine recalls a time when the villagers came together to rebuild a home destroyed by a storm, showcasing their unity and resilience.

Zeqine longs for a change in her circumstances. She believes that improved access to healthcare, education, and sustainable employment opportunities could alleviate the burdens of poverty in her community.



We were able to provide Zequine with a gift of food & medicine (about 2 weeks worth) as well as some money to help her. She was all smiles after receiving the gift.



Despite her hardships, Zeqine finds joy in simple pleasures – a kind word from a neighbor, the bloom of a flower in her garden. These moments of happiness inspire hope for brighter tomorrows.
