In the impoverished neighborhood of Lusaka, Zambia, where crumbling shacks and makeshift homes crowd the dusty landscape, 10-year-old Kasonde faces a daily struggle for survival. His community is plagued by rampant poverty, inadequate healthcare, and scarce resources, making every day a battle for basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.





The streets are lined with trash and debris, and the air is thick with the smell of decay and desperation. Amidst this bleak backdrop, Kasonde's fight against sickle cell disease becomes even more daunting, as he navigates the challenges of his illness while dealing with the harsh realities of his environment.



Kasonde's life has been a constant struggle since his diagnosis with sickle cell disease. The disease causes his red blood cells to be misshapen, leading to excruciating pain episodes, anemia, and recurrent chest infections. He frequently requires hospitalization, which further strains his family's already limited resources. The emotional toll of living with a chronic illness is also significantly affecting Kasonde's mental health and well-being. Despite his young age, he has already experienced more suffering than most people face in a lifetime. Sickle cell disease requires continuous medical attention and expensive medication, making it difficult for Kasonde's family to access the necessary treatment. Without consistent medical care, his condition worsens, putting his life at risk.

We were able to help Kasonde by purchasing him some of the medication he needed to support his treatment for the next three months. We obtained various iron supplement medications for him, as his condition causes him to develop anemia. To alleviate his acute and chronic pain episodes, we provided paracetamol and diclofenac. Additionally, we secured antibiotics prescribed for him as prophylaxis against his recurrent chest infections.













Despite these challenges, Kasonde remains determined to fulfill his dreams. He wants to finish school and become a doctor, inspired by the medical professionals who have helped him throughout his journey. His goal is to contribute to his community, help others suffering from sickle cell disease, and make a positive impact on the world. Kasonde's determination is a testament to the human spirit's ability to persevere in the face of adversity.
